Francesca Abela Tranter trained at the Tanya Bayona Princess Poutiatine Academy. She obtained a diploma from London Contemporary Dance School in UK and a Masters in Performance Dance Studies from University of Malta. Since 1981 she has taught, choreographed, mentored extensively for many dance institutions, her experience spans a diverse dance practice spectrum of thirty years. She has brought renowned international dance companies to Maltese theaters and promoted collaborative international exchanges, platforms and performances developing new audiences.
Francesca offers a wide-range of experience in Contemporary dance styles and techniques maintaining a high artistic level of professional dance. She was resident choreographer for the Tanya Bayona Dance Theatre Company for 10 years creating many works. In her pursuits as both a creator and educator her choreographies range from set choreography and structured improvisation. Her work is committed to art as a cultural exchange developing the creative process in a world that today has no borders. Her work has traveled to high profile theaters and festivals throughout Europe and North Africa.
Francesca encourages improvisation as an art and choreographic tool to further develop her education work. She founded Contact Dance Company in 1998 as a vehicle to promote her own choreographic research. Since its inception Francesca has created numerous works for the company as well as independent commissions. She has directed various projects and venues and has contributed widely to the Contemporary Dance Scene in Malta. She has collaborated with international artists worldwide and continues to create opportunities for young dancers. She continues to research, develop and uncover the potential of a recognizable Maltese style which is significantly current to the Mediterranean.
In 2001 she founded and organized the annual ‘Summer International Contemporary Dance Hybrid Malta’ hosting international guest artists now in its 14th year and in 2011 she launched ‘Dance on the Move’ a weekly platform hosting masterclasses conducted by a rotation of celebrated teachers visiting the island. Francesca forms part of the teaching faculty at the University of Malta School of Performing Arts since 2010 and The Dance Workshop since 1998. She contributes on the board of the Malta International Dance and Competition bi- annual Event (launching March 2015), and forms part of the Malta Arts festival committee. She is in the process of developing and establishing the pilot project of Zfinfest as an official International annual dance Festival of Malta (2015).
Francesca’s classes draw from Western training traditions in Graham, Cunningham and Limon techniques supported by Contact Improvisation, Improvisation and Choreography. She teaches a release based Contemporary class using influences of the flying low method, examining the dancer’s relationship to the floor and improvisation which is influenced by the training she teaches. Her classes build a strong centre combining precision leg work and fluidity of the torso exploring shift of weight. Using classical elements and the complexity of structured improvisation marked by a theatrical sensibility. Encouraging self – expression, natural movement and personal interpretation.
